A Split Society | Divergent by Veronica Roth

Hey Bro,

Today I’m reviewing a book which I read a long time ago, and have never got down to reviewing. This book has earned a special place on my favourite books shelf and it certainly deserves it.

This book is set in a society which is obsessed with belonging somewhere, it’s divided into 5 factions based on personality attributes. When you turn a certain age you choose where you belong, a test helping you decide. Tris Prior’s results are inconclusive. She isn’t just one thing, she’s divergent and a threat to the system. In order to keep her life she must hide and pretend to be normal. Will she stay with her family or move to a different faction? (I’ve just realised, whenever I describe the plot of a book I sound like I’m doing a voice over for a dramatic film trailer!)

I personally really like Tris Prior. She’s loyal caring and beautiful on the inside and out, my favourite character has to be Four though. He’s nicknamed after the amount of fears he has, because having such a little amount is rare. Four is one of the characters who you wish to wrap in a blanket to protect from the author’s plans; he’s also another “book boyfriend” that you want to have. Four and tris become the love interest of the book with them both having more in common than they first thought. I personally dislike Eric, the leader of the dauntless, in fact I don’t know anyone who likes Eric. Why would you? He’s a self-centered prick. I was annoyed at how the film portrayed Eric as the book clearly states “his face is pierced in so many places I loose count” but in the film he has two piercings, nothing out of the ordinary.

There are many covers for this book and I personally like mine the best. The options you can get are as follows:

I have the 2nd one which I like because it links to the book and, face it, it’s really pretty! I saw the film trailer before I read the book which then urged me to buy the trilogy from waterstones and read them all before the film release. Though vital scenes, like the one with the butter knife (if you’ve read it you’ll understand what I mean) and characters like Uriah were completely ignored. All in all I did really enjoy the film but as always it wasn’t as good as the book.

If you enjoy books like The Hunger Games then you’d like this. I’d encourage everyone to give it a try as it’s brilliantly written and a great story-line.

My favourite quotes:

A brave man acknowledges the strength of others
Who cares about pretty? I’m going for noticeable
“You know, most boys would enjoy being trapped in close quarters with a girl.” I roll my eyes.
“Not claustrophobic people, Tris.”

Song of the day: All About You – McFly

That’s all, see you soon.
